Dan and Rosemary working hard.
Hampshire based Dan and Rosemary Powell are professional artists, mainly specialising in all things wildlife. Spending many hours working side by side in both studio and field.
They met on the wildlife illustration course, at Dyfed College of Art, Carmarthen in 1980.
Butterflies, dragonflies, flowers and birds are Rosemary’s main inspiration. She has won British Birds Bird Illustrator of the year and PJC awards. Among her many commissions, she has been asked to produce cover paintings for the Butterflies of Hampshire and the Dragonflies of Hampshire.
Recently her time was consumed with painting every British species of butterfly for a set of pocket sized Identification cards. Sometimes they work together on projects, collaborating on producing a series of paintings of garden birds for the same series of pocket guides and in 2011 their work appeared alongside each other’s in the art book There and back, published by Langford Press.
Dan is probably best known for his field guide The Dragonflies of Great Britain. His drawings and paintings have appeared in numerous wildlife books and publications. Recently he collaborated with Tony Soper on an anniversary edition of the long running top seller ‘Bird Table Book’.
In 1995 he won the Artists for Nature Foundation award which resulted in a field trip to the Pyrenees and an exhibition in the Gaudi designed building La Pedrera in Barcelona. He has also won British Birds Bird Illustrator of the year, but took a lot longer to win it than Rosemary!
Much of their time is spent in The New Forest, recording in sketches and paintings the ever changing rhythm of seasons of this beautiful area.
